Different types of jackets
A hardshell jacket is waterproof and breathable, it protects you from wind and precipitation, but has no thermal insulation. Ideal for warm conditions. The jacket can also be used in other seasons, for example, as a mackintosh.
A softshell jacket is slightly thicker in material, but still unlined. The breathable, stretchy fabric is not as waterproof as a hardshell, but it is slightly warmer. Perfect for spring and autumn. And because of its high breathability, a softshell can also be used for other outdoor activities than just winter sports.
A padded winter sports jacket is water-repellent and it keeps out the wind, but it is also lined. A padded jacket is warmer than a softshell or a hardshell, but still a technical jacket that makes it very suitable for winter sports. Specific winter sports attributes like a pocket for your ski pass or a snow catcher are pretty standard for such a jacket. But here too, just like with other types of coats, choices can be made. Should the hood be detachable? Should there be ventilation zips under the armpits? Should the cuffs be adjustable? How many pockets should the jacket have?
