WATERPROOFING

The clothing is treated on the outer textile layer with an ultra-thin water-repellent "impregnation agent". The impregnating agent is odourless, invisible and has 'zero environmental impact'. The agent penetrates deep into the fibres and lowers the surface tension of the textile. As a result, water rolls off the outer textile layer in beads and is not absorbed by the fabric. An additional advantage is that impregnated clothes are less likely to pick up dirt, keeping your clothes looking like new for longer.

GREEN EARTH METHOD IS 100% GREEN

Originating from America, the GreenEarth method offers an ideal alternative to chemical cleaning. This is because it is good for the clothes, the user and the planet. The cleaning agents are made of sand-based silicones, making them fully biodegradable, odourless and gentle on all types of textiles.

REPAIR

At repair, hand in your garment clean and washed. Is this not the case? Then we must have it passed the laundry service before repair. The cost of washing will then be added to the repair cost and the processing will take one week longer.

PRACTICAL ADVICE

If you hang your winter sportswear in the closet for a longer period of time, it is wise to have it cleaned first. This will prevent dirt from getting deeper and therefore more firmly embedded in the fabric over time.

CAN I WASH WINTER SPORTSWEAR AT HOME?

We often get questions about how to wash ski and snowboard clothing. On this page, we will address that.

Yes, they can be washed up to 30 degrees, unless otherwise indicated on the label. Please use a normal washing program. You can use a neutral detergent but there are also special detergents for technical materials; Holmenkol has developed some special detergents for cleaning and impregnating technical clothing.

Note: Do not use fabric softeners, chlorine and bleach. These can damage the fibres of the fabrics. Centrifuging is allowed.

INCLUDED IN OUR PRODUCT RANGE:

  • Holmenkol Textile Wash 500; liquid detergent for hygienic maintenance while maintaining breathability.
  • Holmenkol High Tec Proof 250; an impregnating agent for leather and textiles.
  • Holmenkol WooDo Wash 250; a mild washing balm, especially suitable for natural fibres such as (merino) wool, silk, etc: (merino) wool, silk and natural fillings (feather, down).
  • Holmenkol Sport Hygienic; a deodorant for your ski or snowboard boots.

WHAT DO I NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN WASHING A DOWN JACKET?

If you have bought a down jacket, remember that it needs to be looked after in a different way than most other jackets. It would be a shame to ruin your beautiful down jacket after just one wash! In this video our advisor Carolien explains step-by-step how to wash your down jacket.

TO THE DRY CLEANER?

It sounds like the easiest and best option: just drop off your down jacket at the dry cleaner's and pick it up again a few days later like new. But beware: many dry cleaners use chemical cleaning! Dry cleaning is harmful for down jackets, because it causes the jacket to lose its resilience, making it seem heavier and less comfortable around the body. Do you want to take your down jacket to the dry cleaner? Please make sure to mention in advance that the jacket cannot be dry cleaned.

HAND WASH OR MACHINE WASH?

A hand wash is of course always a safe way to clean your jacket, but you can also wash your jacket in the washing machine. There are a few things to keep in mind. First of all, it is important to set the washing machine to the 'wool wash' programme and to set the temperature to a maximum of 40 degrees (for most coats 30 degrees is enough). Then put the down jacket in the washing machine and make sure it has enough space. Finally, spin the machine for as short a time as possible. Do not use fabric softener, chlorine and/or bleach.

WHAT KIND OF DETERGENT IS SUITABLE?

Normal detergents are absolutely not suitable for washing down jackets. Regular detergents have a degreasing effect and break down the natural fat of the down. We recommend using a special down washing detergent. A natural product that is suitable for washing down jackets is Natural Wash 250 by Holmenkol.

HOW DO I GET A DOWN JACKET DRY AGAIN?

After washing, you can put your down jacket in the dryer. Choose a very low temperature drying programme (this can take up to 3 hours!). Put a couple of tennis balls in the dryer to loosen the down during the drying cycle. This way you make sure that the coat does not come out of the dryer as a flat package. Don't have a tumble dryer or don't want to use it? Of course you can just hang the coat outside. Just shake it out regularly to prevent the down feathers from sticking together, which would reduce the insulating power of the jacket. Also make sure the jacket is not hanging in full sunlight.

JUST TO BE SURE

If you are unsure about how to best treat your down jacket, check the label on your winter jacket. The label will usually indicate the best way to wash it. Not sure what all the icons on the label mean? Then we have compiled a handy overview of all the icons and their meanings below:
